Tips for Building and Keeping Good Credit

Tips for Building Good Credit
  • Create and live by a written spending plan (budget).
  • Check your credit report annually for errors. See www.transunion.com, www.equifax.com, or www.experien.com for details.
  • Build an emergency savings account to see you through tough times so you won't be tempted to abuse credit cards or take out high-interest and high-risk loans such as payday and title loans.
  • Make your payments on time every month.
  • Avoid maxing out your credit cards.
  • Pay off your balances in full every month.

Tips for Establishing Credit
  • Begin by getting a checking account and savings account in your own name.
  • Consider putting your name on your utilities accounts.
  • Consider getting your name on any current household home loans, car loans or credit cards that are in good standing with the creditor.
  • Before applying for one of the "big" credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, etc.), consider starting with a gas card or a retail store card.
  • Use only the credit you need and pay the balances in full and on time every month.
  • Be patient and keep trying.
