Frequently Asked Questions About HIRC

Click here for Housing Information and Referral Center Brochure (pdf file) Who may use the Housing Hotline?

The service is available to anyone.

What happens when someone calls?

Callers may be asked to provide their name, county, telephone number and address (if needed) for follow-up purposes. Based on the specific housing needs and questions, we will help research possible options and make appropriate referrals. Depending on the volume of calls and the nature of each request, a response may take anywhere from a few minutes to one working day.

When is the hotline available?

The service is provided from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (MST) Monday through Friday. We are closed on weekends and certain holidays. To find or list rental housing or to locate emergency and transitional housing providers, visit www.housingidaho.com 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What about housing emergencies?

Visit http://www.housingidaho.com/Shelter.html for a list of emergency and transitional housing providers on line. The next best option is usually the nearest church or civic organization, police department, Salvation Army or Community Action Partner. In many cases, services are listed in the Yellow Pages under the following headings: Homeless Services, Missions, Human or Social Services, Housing Authorities or Crisis Intervention. Local city or county clerks offices may also be able to refer you to the nearest emergency services provider.

Can someone use the service more than once?

Yes, whenever there is a housing question.

Can housing providers use the service for referrals?

We strongly recommend listing properties on www.housingidaho.com, as this is where we refer thousands of prospective tenants each month. The service is free to landlords and tenants, and provides useful inventory tools and world-class customer support. Registration is simple and only takes few minutes.

Can you resolve problems between landlords and tenants, borrowers and mortgage companies or home owners and builders?

No. This is not a conflict resolution or mediation service; however, we can suggest options and resources that may be helpful. Idaho Legal Aid Services and the Idaho State Contractor's Board are excellent resources.

Is the service available for general research?

Due to staffing constraints, research is limited to answering specific consumer needs and questions. Requests for extensive research and reporting will be considered on a case-by-case basis as resources allow. The US Census Bureau, Northwest Area Foundation Indicators website and Headwaters Economics are wonderful resources for demographic, economic and community data.
